A distinctive, idyllic region
This cruise will include some fabulous navigation through 2 tunnels and a lift that replaces the work of 17 locks! Fantastic visits to a hilltop chapel, the city of Strasbourg, glass blowing, train ride and a day trip through the beautiful wine villages of the Alsace; plus on this trip we will be serving the wines from all the major wine producing areas of France.
Arrival and evening cruise
We will arrange to pick you up from either Frankfurt or Strasbourg depending on your preference. The crew will be waiting to welcome you on board the Apres Tout for an amazing 6 night cruise on the Canal de la Marne & Rhin and Canal des Houilleres. Following a Champagne reception and settling into your cabin, we cast off for your cruise on these unspoilt canals. A delicious four course dinner is served with wines to match, while you sit comfortably under our canopy on the teak deck under the stars.
Visit the magnificent city of Strasbourg
After breakfast, your guide transfers you to this wonderful city. Here, you will visit the pink Gothic Cathedral, astronomical clock, the Place Gutenberg and discover the fabulous Petite France area. Returning to the barge for lunch we continue along the Canal de la Marne au Rhin. There are several locks with plenty of opportunities to walk or cycle along the tow path to our mooring at Saverne. One of the specialities of this area is the Tarte Flambée – a flat pizza bread with cream, bacon and onions – and we will serve some on board with pre dinner drinks tonight.
Visit Saverne and cruise to Lutzelbourg
This morning we walk into Saverne, this charming town has an interesting history and a fantastic ‘Grand Rue’ with many half timbered buildings, the Chateau du Rohan and cloisters. Within walking distance there is a Roseraie filled with 550 varieties of roses – some of which are antique and smell divine. Return to the barge for lunch and afternoon cruise into Lutzelbourg.

Experience the 44 metre boat lift and cruise through 2 tunnels! Visit a local glass blower and hilltop chapel at Dabo
Continue this wonderful cruise though the most spectacular country side, towards the most unique boat lift in France. The span is over 44 metres and takes 4 minutes to complete and is a truly special experience and a real highlight of this cruise.
Enjoy lunch on board and later in the afternoon you will visit the master glass blower Bruno and see him at work – this area is famous for its glass and his show room is remarkable. Next we visit the hilltop chapel at Dabo, created from Sandstone – this rock rises 664 metres above sea level and gives inspiring 360° panoramic views over the Vosges Mountains.
Visit Obenai, wine tasting and lunch before cruising to Xouaxange
After a delightful breakfast, your guide will take you this morning to the scenic village of Obernai set in the heart of the Alsace vineyards. Moving on through the villages to Barr where we have arranged a private visit and wine tasting with a local producer, they have a collection of bottles dating back to 1921. Afterwards we walk to a local restaurant and enjoy a 3 course lunch in the centre of the wine village. Return to the Apres Tout and continue cruising to the charming village of Xouaxange.
Morning market in Phalsbourg, cruising on the Canal des Houilleres and a train ride through the forest in a private carriage
This morning we visit a market in Phalsbourg, and then return to the barge and she continues her journey along this beautiful canal, surrounded by the forests. After lunch your guide transfers you to the village of Abreschvillier where we have a private ‘Orient Express’ type carriage awaiting to take you on a 9 mile memorable journey through the forest of the Mosel on a little steam train. Caroline will be busy preparing your final evening dinner with superb wines and all the crew will toast the success of your week with us in the Alsace.

The day to day itinerary described here is a typical cruise. However, on any one cruise the moorings may change and the places visited may vary depending on the season and guest preferences.
