We have just discovered the wonderful country side of Burgundy on board the fabulous barge named Apres Tout meaning after all in French. A truly wonderful experience cruising on the French canals in Burgundy France.
We thoroughly enjoyed six fun filled days on board the barge with the emphasis on cycling – our passion! The team organized a special itinerary for us taking into account our ability and interest in cycling.
We joined the barge moored at Pont d’ouche on the Canal de Bourgogne, welcomed with Champagne and gourgeres – a Burgundy cheese choux pastry delight and immediately felt at home. Ropes were untied and we enjoyed our first cruising experience along the pictureque canal – fabulous.
The following day we left the barge after a delightful breakfast for our first ride, a challenging one as we were heading into the hills! A steep climb took us up high and afforded us a magnificent view of the valley below. The view from this medieval village was superb. We looked down upon the canal winding its way as far as the eye could see, knowing that we would be cruising these stretches filled us with excitement. We passed though some tiny villages on small roads, we really felt as though we were immersed completely in this charming land.
Each day we would set off on our bikes and then return to the barge for a more leisurely pace of life cruising along the canal and enjoying the gourmet food and excellent wine’s, which we all looked forward to after each ride! We experienced two rides through the stunning Forest de Citeaux, not so challenging as the hill rides but every bit as enjoyable. We also cycled into Dijon via Lake ‘Lac Kir’ into the port, it is a great way to arrive into a large city – following the canal with no main roads to worry about.
In a nutshell – we have had the best time and will be back for more! Thank you to the crew of the Apres Tout for an experience that will last a life time.
