The Apres Tout is cruising in one of France’s most beautiful areas. Burgundy is a truly special region of outstanding beauty, with its Chateaux, vineyards and water ways. Rory and Caroline have chosen to cruise the Apres Tout on the Canal du Bourgogne – the Burgundy Canal – starting (or finishing) in Pont d’ouche and finishing (or starting) in St Jean de Losne. The boat winds her way down through the valley, towards the magical city of Dijon and then down towards the plains and the River Saone. This valley is stunning and how better to admire the passing countryside than from the comfort of your own seat on a shaded deck chair with a chilled glass of Burgundy in hand!
There is so much choice of visits in this area and the itinerary reflects all that is special in this region. Some of the highlights experienced during the week would include a World War II jeep drive through the vines from Clos du Vougeot, driving on the small tracks that wind through the vines gives a wonderful perspective of the famous Cote d’or (coast of gold – when in October all the vines turn golden).
A private visit to the fabled house of Joseph Drouhin with their resident wine expert, discovering by foot the maze of cellars covering an unbelievable 2 acres beneath the historic town of Beaune and of course, finding some secluded corner for a fabulous tasting in the vaults
Lunch is taken on shore at Drouhin Laroze, a Grand Cru producer in Gevry Chambertin – Madam prepares lunch herself – which is always full of local Burgundy specialities and is taken on her terrace, overlooking her vines and of course, she is always on hand to introduce you to her wonderful wines!
The final destination of the week is the river side town of St Jean de Losne, the largest inland port in the whole of France. The river is so peaceful and scenic and after a wonderful canal cruise, it is a great comparison to get out onto the river and let the engine rive up and take on some speed! We cruise for a couple of hours up stream during cocktail hour and weather permitting, serve a delightful gala dinner on the deck. Usually, we are mooring up in time for a Champagne toast with Captain Rory who joins all the passengers and crew to celebrate a fantastic week afloat!
